Church-y Words Glossary

Sometimes we use words or phrases in church that have little or no meaning in today's society outside of church. I'm going to attempt the simple definitions here while trying not to miss the key parts and while not being disrespectful.

If you are seeking a deeper answer, please contact pastor@daegufaith.org or visit these online resources.

Worship

What do you mean by worship?

On the inside cover of a Matt Redman CD that I have, there is a quote, "Worship is our response to the overtures of love from the heart of the Father -- Richard Foster."

The bible also refers to worship as a response: "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - this is your act of spiritual worship." (Romans 12:1 NIV), and also says, "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth." (John 4:23-24 NIV)

This is the reason we have a strong desire to worship - at the heart of our very being, we want to worship.

Who or what we worship is the real question. By nature, we are drawn to what we worship - where our thoughts dwell, what we strive to do, what we think is "cool" and want to be (like).

If you stop and examine where your time, energy, thoughts and money are going, you will have a better picture of who or what you really worship, whether it is your social status, or money, or a computer game, or the Living God.

It doesn't matter where you've been, God loves you right now, and now is the time to worship Him.

Community of Believers

Is this something weird? What kind of people go to your church?

Our congregation is made up of many different cultural backgrounds, from many different church traditions (or no prior traditions, as the case may be).

We're far from perfect, some of us may be really goofy, but weird, strange, or scary as in, "I just read about these nuts in the paper" - that's not us.

We love each other and welcome you to join us. And we don't bite. Much. :)

Being Saved/Relationship

Saved from what? What is a relationship with Jesus Christ?

If someone asks you if you're "saved" what they really mean to ask is: Do you/did you...

  • ... know that in relation to a pure and Holy God, everyone falls short and is considered not pure and holy (a sinner)?
  • ... know that the punishment for this is "like, dude, burning forever in hell" - no amount of "but I'm a good person" points gets you out of it, either...
  • ... know that God loves you, and so He offers a way out (eternal life in heaven!) through Jesus Christ getting beaten and punished and dying on a cross instead of you?
  • ... completely trust God in your heart and tell Him you need and accept the deal He already made for you and turn away from the things that have been holding you back from real joy?
That's a lot of words. That's why they say "Are you saved?"

So... someone bails you out of a jam. Do you say thanks and just walk away forever?

The relationship with Jesus is about spending more time with Him, in the bible, in prayer, and getting to know even more of the cool stuff God's got in store for you.

Being "saved", even though it is about the final part of your life on earth, is really only the beginning of experiencing some of the coolest things God has to offer.

Would you like to know more about being saved? Here's a flash presentation* that will help explain the most significant event in human history, or as some would say, Have you met the Kristo?*

Please see someone in person at the church, or at least email pastor@daegufaith.org if you have any questions or would like to talk to someone about anything on this page.
